Strengthening diagnostic capacity and resilience for the region’s Pathologists

“Having access to Inify’s pathologists as backup during staff absences or high workloads has worked very well and provided a sense of security in our operations. It has reduced vulnerability and contributed to a more consistent workflow,” says Dr Nadia Motazedian, Pathologist at Region Västmanland.

Through a collaboration with Inify, prostate biopsy samples from the urology department at Västmanland Hospital in Västerås, Sweden, are sent to Inify for tissue preparation. The diagnosis is performed by the region’s own Pathologist, Dr Nadia Motazedian, with the option of additional support from Inify’s Pathologists when needed.

First region to use AI in clinical workflow

By working within Inify’s system, Region Västmanland became the first region in Sweden to use AI in the clinical workflow for prostate cancer diagnostics. “AI is a valuable complement, that can be particularly helpful in identifying small areas of cancer,” Dr Motazedian comments.

Inify Prostate®, an AI-based decision support tool, enhances diagnostic precision by highlighting areas of suspected cancer. Pathologists remain fully responsible for all diagnoses, using AI as a support tool - similar to a spell-check - helping reduce variability while improving efficiency.

The algorithm used by Inify Prostate® has been developed and validated together with internationally renowned pathologists from three continents. In a study together with experts from Tufts Medical Center and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, both in the United States, the algorithm showed an impressive 100% sensitivity for WSIs with small foci of cancer (<1 mm). The overall sensitivity was 99.4% and specificity was 97%.

Life-saving detective work

“The platform is tailored to the Pathologist’s workflow, which makes it easy to focus on the diagnostic work itself, and I find that templates and smart features make me more efficient.”
“The most enjoyable part of being a Pathologist is undoubtedly the diagnostic detective work,” continues Dr Motazedian, emphasising the importance of quality and precision. “It is crucial to have access to high-quality material, relevant clinical information, and sufficient time to make a well-founded assessment.”

How effectively has Inify’s solution met these needs for efficient and reliable diagnostics?

“The image quality is very good, and it is easy to navigate the slides digitally. The platform is tailored to the Pathologist’s workflow, which makes it easy to focus on the diagnostic work itself, and I find that templates and smart features make me more efficient. The information in the digital referral is relevant and clear.”

Reducing delays and improving operational efficiency

The urology clinic has seen major efficiency gains as a result of the guaranteed response times, as follow-up appointments no longer need to be rescheduled due to delayed pathology results.

“Previously, we had to re-schedule around a third of all follow-up appointments due to missing pathology results, but that task has now been eliminated. We ran the numbers and saw that this alone saves us many workweeks each year across the region for consultant urologists, pathologists, clinical nurse specialists and administrative staff. On top of that, there are further time savings through more efficient diagnostics, easier preparation for multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), and more,” says Marita Larsson, Head of the Urology Clinic in Region Västmanland.

“We are very pleased with the tangible results since we began collaborating with Inify. We can inform patients more quickly and save a great deal of administrative time. The Consultant Urologists appreciate the digital referral and the clear pathology report, and they feel confident in the diagnostic quality,” Marita concludes.

“From a laboratory medicine perspective, we see that with the help of Inify’s service, the cost-driving need to rely on locum consultants or temporary biomedical scientists has decreased,” adds Katarzyna Rogoz, Head of Laboratory Medicine in Region Västmanland.

Collaboration across departments

A key success factor has been the close collaboration between Pathology, Urology, and Inify. The ongoing dialogue has made it possible to identify areas for improvement and continuously develop the service over time.

“Inify has a professional and dedicated team with a strong understanding of the day-to-day realities of pathology, and the dialogue works smoothly,” says Dr Motazedian, whose feedback has led to improvements and further development that have been implemented in a short time and are now an integrated part of Inify’s service.

Significant impact on targets

The shortened and guaranteed turnaround times have resulted in the region ranking among the top three regions in 2025 for delivering timely results to patients in accordance with the targets set by the Standardised Care Pathway (SVF). Before the collaboration began in November 2024, only around 6% of the region’s patients received their cancer diagnosis within the target timeframe. By December of the same year, less than two months after the first sample was sent to Inify, this figure had increased to a remarkable 60%. It should be noted that 100% of all pathology reports were delivered within Inify’s guaranteed turnaround time. However, due to the broad remit of the urology clinic and scheduling constraints, it is not always possible to book patients in immediately after results become available.
